Recent stuff
A pin up parlour, a pitch, some expressions, a cartoon, and a chapter on Thinking
Hi all! Here’s a round-up of recent stuff:
Wins!
If you follow me, you know I recently had a birthday - and on that same day there was an edition of the legendary Martin Draax Pin Up Parlour, a great irregular sketch-session in Amsterdam, at the wonderful location of De Nieuwe Anita:
The models this time were not pin ups but martial arts performers - and I won two prizes!
I also liked how the last three poses turned out, they told the story of a woman rebuffing a man’s advances:
Goodbye (for now) to Ryoko
On a less jollier note: fellow artist Juliette de Wit and I finished our very last episode of Ryoko for magazine Tina - the comic is discontinued, alas… We came together in Juliette’s studio to commiserate:
I love how Juliette drew this “easter egg” into the last episode: that’s us on screen, in a movie called ‘Maggie and Juul continued!’.
We really want to continue this comic, maybe there’s an international magazine/platform that will have us? Here’s our pitch:
Ryoko is a 14 year old who in a lighthearted way deals with stuff like prejudice, controversy and role reversals. Each 2-page episode has a situation that is turned upside down, like this one:
Is there anyone out there who will give Ryoko, her friends and her parents (I especially love her dad, the big guy with the many phobias) a new home…? Contact us!
Express yourself with Dee Fish
I love the work of Dee Fish, she’s also on Substack and I highly recommend you follow her excellent and funny work. Recently she posted this model sheet of her character:
I thought this was such a great idea that I did my own!
A Josh Lieb Cartoon
Josh Lieb can’t draw - but he sure knows how to think up jokes! On November 6th, this was his prompt:
Two men, on a scaffold, about to be hanged. One says to the other: “Now I’m kind of glad I never got my Ph.D.”
Because of certain goings on on that date, this was my interpretation of that joke:
Philosophy
Also on my birthday, I launched my Philosophy book here on Substack!
The whole of the first chapter is now online, dealing with the question: “What is Thinking?”. You can read it here in three episodes:
Tomorrow starts a new chapter: “Who do we think we are?” - about the supposed differences between humans and animals. What is it that sets our human brains apart from those of animals?
Have a nice weekend, with lots of cool thoughts and funny pictures!
Ohhhhhhhhhh!!!!! Sooooo much amazing stuff in this post! 😍
Happy birthday; commiserations on Ryoko but fingers crossed that it's Auf Wiedersehen rather than goodbye forever, and gosh, those model sheets!
Love the art work , and i get josh's posts . hugs and peace to all
